Phase 2 of the $750 million I-59/20 bridge replacement project in Birmingham continues at and around the I-65 junction. If you travel through that area on a regular basis you know you must stay alert to navigate through the huge construction area safely.
I took a driving tour of the area this week to see the construction and show how vast this area is. There is currently work going on building exit ramps to accommodate traffic that will be eventually detoured off of the main downtown bridges on I-59/20.
One of the first big detours will be when the 17th Street exit closes on May 31. This exit, 125A, is one of the busiest entries into the Birmingham CBD. Traffic will be detoured to exit 125B, the 22nd Street exit for about 14 months.
Here is a link to the ALDOT May 2017 update on the project.
Several lanes closures and rolling roadblocks will be required throughout the construction project. The most recent one has been postponed due to weather.
