TEXARKANA, Ar – The city manager of Texarkana, Arkansas says all eyes are on the area in the upcoming rush for medical marijuana permits.
Starting Friday, the state will accept applications to grow and supply medical marijuana. Tuesday evening, the Texarkana Planning Commission discussed how to adjust the city’s zoning laws to accommodate the new businesses.
Up to two cultivation facilities could locate in the area and officials say there’s plenty of interest. City Manager Kenny Haskin says Texarkana, Arkansas has received more than a hundred requests for information on zoning and permitting procedures from potential marijuana growers and suppliers.
Haskin said, “I would say, about seventy to eighty of them are serious. These are proven operators we have taken a look at, we have visited with a lot of them, and these folks in my opinion know exactly what they’re doing. They’ve been in this business a long time.”
Next week, the city plans to roll out the permitting and taxing structure related to cultivation facilities and dispensaries. Arkansas residents recently voted to legalize medical marijuana for people with certain medical conditions.
