When you think of marijuana in music, you immediately think that it’s rap music or rock music that sings the most about it. It turns out that country music mentions drugs more than any other genre, according to Addictions.com.
Drugs are mentioned 1.6% of the time in country music, followed by jazz and then pop music. Drugs are even mentioned in more folk music than in rap. Hip-hop gets a bad rap even though drugs are only mentioned 1.3% of songs. Addictions.com scraped song lyrics from Song Meanings API and analyzed the drugs mentioned and which drugs were referenced.
Rappers aren’t completely off the hook. Rap songs may not rank high on the list of drugs mentioned in songs, but when it comes to the individual artists, rappers make the most references. No surprise that Kottonmouth Kings was No. 1 for marijuana, making 344 references to weed. Followed by The Game at 125 references and Cypress Hill at 124.
In other drug mentions, Too Short was No. 1 for cocaine with 85 references and Tyga won for ecstasy references. English band Kent made 34 references to heroin and Clouddead had 50 comments on acid. Eminem took the No. 1 spot for pill mentions and Method Man took the lead for meth mentions.
